I have a few of these USB-C to USB-A adapters, and I also have a USB Ethernet adapter from TP-Link. I was doing some network rewiring and wanted to test the cable.

I just plugged them both in and assumed it would be okay and fast, however it was not.

With this USB 3.0 to RJ45 Gigabit Ethernet Network Adapter – UE306 from Amazon

Here are the results with the USB-C adapter, notice that there is a 5ms ping and the upload is faster than the download, not sure why, this could be the USB port, the drivers on my laptop or the USB-C adapter.

This time without the USB-C adapter, I get 6 ms ping and near Gigabit speeds, with the USB network adapter plugged in to a USB 3.0 port.

I’m not sure why this is, I could look into it, but it’s not worth it, these adapters are worth their use still, I’ve used them many of times for plugging flash drives into my phone or if I run out of USB ports on my laptop, I can use this.

If you’re interested I use Open Speed Test within a Docker container running locally, I do not get these speeds on my internet, I only get 350Mbps download and 60Mbps upload from my ISP.

To run your own speed test server in Docker, have a look here:

Thanks!

Chris.
